Baklava with Mango Tangerine Sugar Syrup
Makes: 2 ½ dozen pieces
Ingredients:
- 1 package (16 oz) frozen phyllo dough, thawed
- 2 cups finely chopped walnuts, toasted
- ½ cup white sugar
- ½ pound butter (2 sticks), melted
For the Mango Tangerine Syrup:
- ¾ cup Mango Tangerine Sugar
- ¾ cup water
- ⅓ cup honey
- ¾ teaspoon grated lemon peel
- ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Melt the butter over low heat. Brush a 13x9 inch baking pan with 2 tablespoons of melted butter.
- Unroll phyllo dough and trim to fit the pan. Keep remaining sheets covered with plastic wrap and a damp towel to prevent drying out.
- In a bowl, mix together white sugar and toasted walnuts.
- Layer two sheets of phyllo dough in the pan and brush with butter. Repeat this three more times. Sprinkle with ¼ cup of the walnut mixture.
- Continue layering two sheets of phyllo, brushing with butter, and sprinkling with nut mixture. Repeat this 10 times.
- Top with remaining phyllo sheets, brushing every other sheet with butter. Pour any leftover butter on top.
- Using a sharp knife, cut into 30 triangles.
- Bake at 350°F for 35–40 minutes or until golden brown.
Make the Mango Tangerine Syrup:
- While baklava bakes, combine Mango Tangerine Sugar, water, honey, lemon peel, and vanilla in a small saucepan.
- Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes while stirring occasionally.
- When baklava is out of the oven, pour warm syrup over it.
- Let baklava cool completely on a wire rack. Cover with wax paper and allow it to sit for several hours or overnight for best flavor and texture.
This Mango Tangerine Baklava is the perfect dessert for holidays, dinner parties, or whenever you crave something sweet, nutty, and citrusy. The combination of buttery layers and fruity syrup makes every bite irresistible.
